Magnetostatics in MRI: Field Perturbation by Magnetic Susceptibility of the Human Head
In this Master or Semester project, we will explore the static magnetic field that is caused by magnetic susceptibility of the human head when exposed to the strong background field used for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Description
Such static magnetic field perturbation is interesting because it can be measured very sensitively during MRI scans and could potentially serve to detect and correct for head motion.
To this end, the first goal of the project is to study susceptibility-driven field, how it changes when the head moves, and how it varies across different individual heads.
Using a database of segmented head models (SHARM), the project will employ forward simulation from susceptibility to magnetic field distribution. Experiments will/can be performed on a 3T MRI system. Data will be evaluated for the potential to machine-learn its structure across individuals and lay groundwork for motion detection.
